Introduction of the fusion system by Nintendo in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was a total surprise.

The 10 minutes video displayed the Awesome Fusion System for stronger weapons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. You can create fusion weapons and even fusion vehicles like boats and hovercraft – not to mention the already teased drone-style aircraft.

What is Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fusion?

Fuse is the first of Link’s new skills that we see in the latest Tears of the Kingdom trailer, and boy is it a doozy! If anyone mentions weapon degradation ever again, I’ll fuse them into a new one.

As Link is running around a sky island holding a pretty useless branch, he initiates an ability and grabs hold of a large rock. Suddenly, the rock is now attached to the stick, creating a fancy (if not ridiculous-looking) weapon with higher stats.

The trailer then proceeds to show us numerous combinations of weapons that we’re able to make, including a long stick and a farmer’s pitchfork, creating an incredibly long polearm-type weapon.

It isn’t just handheld weapons that can be fused, though – you can equip arrows with many different items to create zany but effective weaponry. You can attach keese eyeballs to arrows to create projectiles that hone in on a target, and we see a… mushroom stuck to a shield. It does have a purpose though – when Link bashes an enemy with it, it releases a dust cloud to obscure its vision.

What are Link’s Tears of the Kingdom abilities?

We’ve seen four of Link’s new abilities so far. This time, they don’t need him to use the Sheikah Slate, but they likely have something to do with his rather battered arm. These abilities let Link manipulate structures in Hyrule and allow the completion of puzzles. In Breath of the Wild, we were introduced to them on the Great Plateau at the start of the game and they included cryonis, remote bombs, stasis, and magnesis.

In Tears of the Kingdom, it looks like they’ve been revamped quite a bit. Obviously, we know of fusion, but there’s also rewind, the ultrahand, and ascend. Rewind, as the name suggests, allows Link to rewind the path and movements of an item. The ‘ultrahand’ ability is fairly similar to fusion, except it lets Link create vehicles instead of weapons. Ascend – also as the name suggests – means that Link can hop through solid structures and appear on top of them.
